Onion prices rose for the first time in two years
If we talk about the price of onion, it has seen an increase for the first time after two years. Onion inflation rate – which was in the negative zone since September 2021, rose to 1.65 percent in June 2023. An increase in the inflation rate of onion indicates an increase in its price in the market. At present, the average price of onion is around 30 rupees per kg in various markets across the country.

Onion prices will increase in August itself
Research firm Crisil said in a report, “Onion ravi crop supply in the open market will begin to decrease in the month of August instead of September. The lean season of onion will be extended by 15-20 days, which is likely to impact the market with tight supply and high prices.”

Self life of ravi crop of onion decreased
According to the report, high temperatures have led to early ripening of onion ravi crop in major producing states like Maharashtra (49 per cent of total), Madhya Pradesh (22 per cent) and Rajasthan (6 per cent) in February. Also, due to unseasonal rains in these regions in March, the quality of onion was affected and its shelf life was reduced from six months to 4-5 months. As a result, there was a concern to store onions and farmers sold the maximum crop.

When will onion prices decrease?
According to Pushan Sharma, Director, Crisil Agency, onion prices will start to come down only after the receipt of kharif crop starts in October, along with improvement in onion supply.

Kharif planting of onion expected to decrease by 8 percent
However, after suffering losses in the 2023 ravi crop, farmers have been discouraged from planting onion, Crisil added. As a result we expect onion acreage to decline by 8 percent this year, and onion kharif production to decline by 5 percent year-on-year,” CRISIL said in the report.

Onion prices increased in Lasangaon, the largest market yard
On Monday, the benchmark onion price was quoted at Rs 1,350 per quintal at Lasalgaon, Maharashtra’s largest onion market yard in the country, which was Rs 1,250 per quintal the previous day. While two months ago, the price of onion here was Rs 950 per quintal. Thus, the wholesale price of onion in Lasangaon has increased by Rs 400 per quintal in two months.

The government will release buffer stock of onion in the market
To keep the price of onion under control, the government will release the onion in its buffer stock in the market in a phased manner. Sources said the government is likely to sell about 30 tonnes purchased from farmers in the market at the right time in the current ravi season.

The government has procured 25 lakh tonnes of onion for buffer stock in 2022-23 as against 20 lakh tonnes of onion for buffer stock in the previous year.

During the crop year 2022-23 (July-June), the estimated production of onion in the country was recorded at 310.1 lakh tonnes. While it was 317 lakh tonnes in the previous year and 266.4 lakh tonnes in the year 2020-21.

From the beginning of the year 2021, the government has not imposed a ban on the export of onions. India exported a record 25 lakh tonnes of onion in 2022-23, up 65 per cent from its previous fiscal year. India is the largest producer of onion in the world and Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat contribute more than 70 percent to the total production of the country.

Karnataka and Maharashtra are witnessing an increase in onion prices due to the rain factor. Traders predict that onion prices will continue to rise till Diwali. According to the CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics Report, the impact of supply-demand imbalance is expected to be reflected in onion prices by the end of August.

As per our on-the-ground conversation, prices are expected to rise in the retail market from the beginning of September to Rs. will touch 60-70. However, prices will remain below the 2020 highs.

Due to reduction in shelf life of ravi onion by 1-2 months and panic selling in February-March this year, ravi stock in the open market is expected to fall significantly by the end of August instead of September. Due to which consumption has decreased. Rates will remain stable in October, the report said, adding that after the arrival of Kharif from October, supply of onions will ease, leading to a softening of prices.

Prices are expected to stabilize during the festive months (October-December), the report said. The fall in onion prices during the January-May period this year has brought some relief to consumers who were buying grains, pulses and other vegetables at high prices. However, this caused losses to onion farmers and also affected sowing.

A report on low production in the kharif season said, ‘We expect a decline of 8 per cent in acreage and 5 per cent in kharif production this year.
